Rays Make Another Interesting Swap With Padres

Hunter Renfroe joins the 2020 Tamoa Bay Rays season lineup.

Hunter Renfroe joins the 2020 Tamoa Bay Rays season lineup.

If you got déjà vu from the Rays recent trade, it’s understandable considering how similar this deal is to another trade the two teams made only a month before. In January Tampa Bay made a shocking deal to trade outfielder Tommy Pham to San Diego in exchange for outfielder Hunter Renfroe and second base prospect Xavier Edwards. Just a couple weeks later the Rays traded another established Major League player to the Pads in relief pitcher Emilio Pagan for another Padres outfielder in Manuel Margot. Also headed to the Bay is catching and outfield prospect Logan Driscoll who had a slash line of .340/.458/.797 in the Northwest league. He’ll start the 2020 season in Class-A Bowling Green for Tampa Bay.

Why did the Rays make this trade?

Fans may be curious as to why the Rays traded Pagan, the team’s leader in saves with twenty. For starters, Tampa Bay felt confident in their many bullpen arms, including Nick Anderson, Colin Poche, Diego Castillo, and Oliver Drake. They’re also counting on a rebound year from Jose Alvarado, who struggled after a scorching start last season. On top of that if guys like Brent Honeywell and Anthony Banda can fully recover from Tommy John surgery and be effective, it’s safe to say Tampa Bay will have a deep enough bullpen.

The fact the Rays had four outfielders before this trade occurred also makes it interesting. Margot is a defensive outfielder, primarily in centerfield, with a very similar profile to Kevin Kiermaier but from the right side of the plate. However, Margot is coming off a year in which he hit .330/.420/.466 clip against lefties, making him an ideal platoon with Kiermaier, who struggles against left handers. Outfielder Randy Arozarena, acquired from St. Louis this offseason, is affected the most by this deal as instead of having a chance to be the fourth outfielder on the Opening Day roster, Margot will take that spot. Chances are Arozarena will start the year in Triple-A Durham.

General Manager of the Rays Erik Neander told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times that they had been on Margot for a while, and had tried to acquire him with prospects. When that didn’t work the Rays resorted to trading from a place of depth to acquire a needed position player. Neander also told Topkin, “We feel really good about where we stand right now.” At the end of the day this trade sends a message to Tampa Bay: We want to win now.

Why did the Padres make this deal?

This one’s a little easier to explain. The main reason for San Diego agreeing to this is they wanted to bolster an already solid bullpen. MLB Network rated Padres closer Kirby Yates as the top relief pitcher in baseball and now they can throw Pagan into that mix, which should be lethal. Having a strong bullpen will be crucial for San Diego as they will need to eat up innings to back a very young and inexperienced starting rotation.

However there are negatives to this deal for San Diego as centerfield is wide open for the Pads. Without the rangy Margot in center the outfield defense takes a significant hit. Newcomers such as Trent Grisham and former Ray Tommy Pham may have to plug that hole for the Friars, both of which are used to playing the corner outfield positions. The Padres took a risk in the outfield to strengthen the ‘pen, and only time will tell if it was worth it.

What’s next for Tampa Bay?

That’s a tough question with the always innovative Rays’ front office. After the Jose Martinez trade most Rays’ fans, including me, felt the Rays were pretty much set with their roster heading into Spring Training other than a few minor league signings. Clearly we were wrong as the Rays made another significant trade only days before pitchers and catchers reported.

However, with only about two weeks before the Rays’ Spring Training opener, I just don’t see the Rays making another big trade, especially one that removes current players from the 25-man roster. Although Tampa Bay’s front office has a knack of making surprising trades so I wouldn’t completely rule it out. One thing is for certain, the Rays want to win, and now. If they can make another trade to improve the roster significantly for the right cost, they’ll do it.

Armwood High School students create English Language Learners Bill

The English Language Learners Bill is an effort by Armwood High School seniors to ensure equality between native and non-native English speakers when taking English Graduation Tests.

The English Language Learners Bill is an effort by Armwood High School seniors to ensure equality between native and non-native English speakers when taking English Graduation Tests.

Two-term Florida Republican Representative Kevin Ambler originally began the county wide “Ought to Be A Law” competition to encourage students to propose bills to congress.  Fifteen years later, Kevin Ambler is out of office, but Armwood High School civics teacher, Tony Pirotta, and his students kept it going.

Senior Maria Medina noticed one of her fellow classmates, who transferred to Hillsborough County’s Armwood High School after moving from Cuba, struggling with English.  Her classmate was passing all her other classes with flying colors, except for English.  English Graduation Tests assume the test taker understands the language fluently.  The student has already completed the English Language Learner’s program (a program designed to teach non-native speakers English), but those classes, crammed into 4-7 years, cannot teach the entirety of the English language.  The fine-tuning that comes in high school level English classes can’t be understood by students who are still struggling to learn the complicated components of the English language.  Therefore, understanding English on the level they are expected to understand for English tests is nearly impossible-which is where Pirotta’s student’s bill comes in.

House Bill 143/ Senate Bill 376, the most recent bills originating from Tony Pirotta’s civics club, “exempts certain English Language Learners from specified graduation requirement[s].”  In this case, the graduation requirement would be English Graduation Tests.  Both bills have been referred to their respective house’s “PreK-12 Innovation Subcommittee” on September 23 and hope to be approved by July 1, 2020.

In an interview with the Tampa Bay Times, senior Haley Manigold says “We believe that every student deserves an equal opportunity.  If you take a test and you can’t understand it, then the test is not effectively showing what you know.”

Similar bills have been introduced by Democratic Senator Annette Taddeo and Democratic Representative Cindy Polo (HB 1213/SB 1590).  These bills state that non-native English speakers should be able to take tests required for graduation in their native language.

Many students have joined Pirotta’s it “Ought to Be A Law Club” to help their fellow classmates who are challenged by the English requirement.  Zachary Mills, a member of the club says, “I just want to be part of the group that makes things better.”

With the help of their teacher, the members of the club have communicated with Democratic Florida Representative Susan Valdes, who has assisted the students in getting the bill into its respective committee and onto the Senate and House floor.  The English Language Learners bill will increase graduation rates for non-native English-speaking students and will promote fair high school testing for students of all nationalities.  Haley Manigold and a few of her classmates hope to travel to Tallahassee to lobby the bill in Congress for the 2020 Legislative Session, which begins January 14.

Rays rebound sends Series back to Houston

Two players enjoy camaraderie as the Rays' record recovers.

Yahoo Sports

Two players enjoy camaraderie as the Rays' record recovers.

The Rays were on the plane back to St.Petersburg, down 2-0 in the ALDS against the heavily favored Houston Astros. They had run into the buzz saw of Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole, the top 2 pitchers in A.L. Cy Young voting, in Games 1 and 2. The Rays’ chances were bleak coming into the series but now they were at an all-time low. Most sports channels such as FS1 and MLB Network already had written off the Rays, and with New York up 2-0 in their series, they were preparing for an Astros v Yankees ALCS. However, baseball is rarely that simple, just ask the 2011 Red Sox who were up 10 games in September with 28 games remaining and managed to miss the playoffs, ironically to these same Rays.

“We got nothing to lose,” Willy Adames said after Game 2 loss by the score of 3-1, where Gerrit Cole struck out 15 in 7.2 innings. Heading into Game 3, that mantra showed as the Rays looked to be playing much looser than the first 2 games. They played better defense, committing only 1 error between Games 3 and 4, didn’t chase as many bad pitches and most importantly, hit with runners in scoring position which led to a 10 run outburst and a 10-3 win in Game 3, cutting the series lead to 2-1.

The Houston starter Zack Greinke struggled, not making it out of the 4th while giving up 6 runs including a 3 run blast by Kevin Kiermaier, and the bullpen didn’t do much better. Hector Rondon and Wade Miley gave up 4 runs over 2.2 innings to give the Rays a commanding 10-3 lead they would not relinquish.

The Rays, who were not a power hitting team in the regular season, finishing in the bottom 3rd for homeruns in Major League Baseball, rode the gopher ball to victory as Kiermaier, Adames, Choi, and Brandon Lowe all went deep, making sure to send the raucous 32,000 plus at Tropicana Field home happy.

Now the series was cut to 2-1 but with Verlander looming in Game 4, the celebration from Game 3 turned into determination to win Game 4. Verlander, for the 1st time in his career, was pitching on the three days rest and he did not look sharp early, giving up a solo homerun to Tommy Pham, igniting the crowd who was ear-deafening loud, and remained that way for the remainder of the game.

After the homerun, Travis d’Arnaud snuck a ground ball through the hole to score Choi, followed by a RBI double from Joey Wendle to put up three in the 1st against a future Hall of Famer in Justin Verlander, who had shut them down just four days earlier. Suddenly the Rays were in the driver’s seat to send the series back to Houston, and since it was a bullpen day, the Rays needed the bullpen to hold the Astros, who had been dominant in the 2nd half led by power arms like Emilio Pagan, Diego Castillo, and trade deadline pick-up Nick Anderson, who pitched to the tune of a 2.11 ERA with the Rays.

After the offense added another run on a Willy Adames solo blast and the bullpen put up 8 dominant innings it was looking like game was a lock with Tampa Bay up 4-1 after 8. However, Emilio Pagan struggled, giving up back to back singles after getting the 1st out. Kevin Cash then proceeded to make an out of the box move.

Needing two more outs to push the series to Game 5 he put in reigning Cy Young award winner Blake Snell to get the save. With runners on 1st and 3rd with one out, everyone on their feet, Snell broke out a nasty curve to finish off Yordan Alvarez on 3 pitches. Next was Yuli Gurriel, who on the 1st pitch hit a rocket up the middle. Luckily, because of the shift, Joey Wendle was right there, made the play, and the Rays had done what most experts and fans thought was impossible, they had forced a Game 5.

Suddenly, after being up 2-0, Houston was now facing elimination. With one more win, Tampa Bay could “shock some people” as Kevin Cash put it and turn October on its head. Kevin Kiermaier put it best: “We ain’t done yet, we ain’t yet.”

Tampa Bay Lightning looks to make statements this upcoming season

Fans+rally+behind+the+team%2C+in+hopes+for+victory+in+the+2020+Stanley+Cup.

Luis Santana

Fans rally behind the team, in hopes for victory in the 2020 Stanley Cup.

The Tampa Bay Lightning is looking to win its second Stanley Cup in the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs. The last time the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup was in the 2003-04 NHL season. The Lightning look to dominate and make a statement this upcoming season.

With new additions for the Lightning for the 2019-20 season, the Tampa Bay Lightning look to add more physical players to the roster. The Tampa Bay Lightning added Stanley Cup Champion, Patrick Maroon, 31, for this season. Last season, Maroon played and won the Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues and is a hard working player who can score and can add depth to the Lightning. Maroon will not back down from a fight and had sixty-four penalty minutes during the regular season. This shows that Maroon will stick up for his teammates and will provide depth for the team.

The Lightning also added Luke Witkowski, 29, a free agent who the Lightning inked for 2 years from the Detroit Red Wings can provide the team with his ability to hit and fight. Witkowski is not a big goal scorer, but can support his team with body checks and hits.

The Lightning had to trade some of their stars this offseason and make some tough choices and decisions. Ryan Callahan, 34, who was traded to the Ottawa Senators, spent five seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning and will likely retire from playing hockey due to his severe back injury that doctors recommended he should stop playing hockey. In exchange for Callahan, the Lightning got goalie Mike Condon and a draft pick.

The Lightning also traded forward, J.T. Miller, 26, to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for two first round draft picks. The Lightning also gave up forward, Adam Erne, 24, to the Detroit Red Wings, in exchange for a 2020 fourth round draft pick.

The biggest news is that the Lightning haven’t made a deal to extend one of their top stars, Brayden Point. Point, 23, is a restricted free agent who scored a total of 92 points in the 2018-19 NHL season. Point said in an interview “I would like to stay in Tampa,” but the season is very close to starting and he has yet to sign a contract with any team. This has made Lightning fans worry about a fan favorite player, not resigning with the Lightning.

This year, Tampa Bay Lightning Captain, Steven Stamkos, 29, will play in his twelfth NHL season looking to win his first career Stanley Cup. Stamkos has led the team since 2014 since the departure of Martin St. Louis, who is now in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Stamkos also led the Lightning to a Stanley Cup Final in 2015, when the Lightning took on the Chicago Blackhawks. The Lightning lost the series, 4-2. After their historical season in the 2018-19 NHL season ending with the best record in the league, they lost in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, 4-0, to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Stamkos said “it was a fluke.” The Lightning plan to come out aggressive, strong, and end that way, but this time with a Stanley Cup.

The Lightning have many star players such as Nikita Kucherov, 26, Victor Hedman, 28, Tyler Johnson, 29, Andrei Vasilevskiy, 25, and many more, as they have a stacked lineup filled with top scorers. Kucherov, is coming off a historical season ending with 128 points winning the Hart

Memorial Trophy as NHL Most Valuable Player, Arts Ross Trophy for most points in the NHL, and Ted Lindsay Award for most outstanding player for the season. Kucherov set the NHL record for most points in a single season by a Russian-born player. Hedman, came off a season of injuries, but is ready to go for this upcoming season and is feels like he is healthier than ever. Johnson tied his own record for most goals in his career during a single season with 29. Vasilevskiy won the Vezina Trophy for the best NHL goaltender.

This shows that the Lightning can be one of the greatest teams with their style of playing and having great coaches and players. The Lightning plan to win the Stanley Cup and they plan to be one of the greatest teams for a long time.

Lightning Keeps On Striking

Lightning+Keeps+On+Striking

Clough, Jason P.

Tampa Bay, Fla.–The Tampa Bay Lightning are off to a hot start into the 2018-19 National Hockey League season as they have a record of four wins, one loss, and one overtime loss. In their home opener on October 6, 2018, they defeated the Florida Panthers 2-1 in a shootout. They fell behind in their second game of the season as they lost to the Vancouver Canucks 4-1 when they let three goals in the last ten minutes of the third period.

The Lightning struck back with a huge win over the Columbus Blue Jackets defeating the Blue Jackets 8-2. The Lightning had rearranged their lines, moving Yanni Gourde and Brayden Point to the first line with Captain Steven Stamkos. This led to the reunion of the triplet’s line, a line consisting of Ondrej Palat, Tyler Johnson, and Nikita Kucherov who are a dominant line throughout the whole NHL.

They had their offense going once again with a win against the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 with Tyler Johnson getting the hat trick. A hat trick in hockey is whenever a player scores three goals in one game and then fans throw their hats onto the ice.

The Lightning kept striking with another win over the Detroit Red Wings 3-1. They were so close to winning their sixth game of the season but took an overtime loss against the Minnesota Wild 5-4. They came right back and destroyed the Chicago Blackhawks 6-3 with a record of shots in the second period with a total of thirty three shots. They totaled fifty four shots in the game.

The Lightning play Vegas’ Golden Knights tonight, Oct. 26.

Rocky Point Golf Club in Tampa Bay

Tampa, Fla.–A golfer has many courses to choose from in Tampa Bay. Golfers can go to courses such as Bay Palms Golf Complex, Heritage Isles Golf and Country Club, Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club, Westchase Golf Club, and Rocky Point Golf Club.

Bay Palms Golf Complex has two 18 hole, par 72 courses and the complex calls it a “golfers paradise.” They also have a variety of foods and they have a golf shop. The Bay Palms Golf Complex has two courses, the north and the south. The complex says the south course is the hardest one to play on and is very challenging. You can also get private lessons at this complex in Tampa.

The Heritage Isles Golf and Country Club offers a golf league and “has a rich landscape.” The Heritage Isles Golf Club considers their course to be “beautiful.” They also offer lessons on the driving range and they also have a pro shop to get your golf gear or equipment from.

The Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club offers an 18-hole Arthur Hills golf course. This country club also offers a heated pool and tennis courts to play on. You can even host different activities and you can even host a wedding there if you’re getting married.

The Westchase Golf Club has a variety of things to do at their club. You can set up a wedding and other bookings. You can also play golf and set you own tee off time when it is available. This golf course and club is known as Tampa’s “friendliest golf course.”

Lastly, the Rocky Point Golf Club opened in 1911. It was used for prisoners during World War Two, at which time the federal government closed the course to golfers. In 1953, the course was reopened and the property was sold over to the City of Tampa for $1. The City of Tampa still owns this course today. You can buy a membership to this course and there is also a grill there to eat at. You can also book a tee time at the course.

If you are looking to golf in Tampa Bay, I highly recommend that you go to one of these courses.

Bucs Off to a Good Start Despite Quarterback Suspension

Underdog+quarterback+Fitzpatrick

BucsNation

Underdog quarterback Fitzpatrick

Tampa Bay, Fla.–The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are off to a good start to their season, despite the suspension of star quarterback, Jameis Winston. Winston was suspended for three games for a conflict with an Uber driver, so backup quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick, started the first game for the 2018 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the team won by defeating the New Orleans Saints with a score of 48-40. Fitzpatrick led the team to this win with four touchdowns and 417 total yards.

The second week pitted the Buc against the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. The Bucs started Fitzpatrick again, and won against the Super Bowl champions. The final score of that game was 27-21 with Fitzpatrick having another fantastic game with four touchdowns and a total of 402 yards. The Bucs then went on to lose their third game of the season to the Pittsburgh Steelers with a close final score of 30-27. Fitzpatrick would then total 411 yards with three touchdowns for the team. The Bucs are currently at two wins and one loss this season.

The Bucs’ next game is on September 30, 2018 against the Chicago Bears who have the same record as the Bucs. This time, the Bucs will not have home field advantage as they will play in Chicago. Tampa fans will want to see the Bucs pull this one off and continue their dominance with their backup quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Tampa Bay Rays Finish a Great Season

Tampa Bay Rays Finish a Great Season

Skybox Press

Tampa Bay, Fla.–The Tampa Bay Rays are finishing their twentieth anniversary season this fall with a great record, despite having to trade all their star players at the start of the season.

The Tampa Bay Rays traded most of their star players during the 2017 off-season. They traded star player and face of the franchise, Evan Longoria. Longoria played for the Rays for 10 seasons. With Longoria gone, the Rays then traded team All-Star, Corey Dickerson, who’s batting average was over 300. They also traded slugger, Logan Morrison. With most of the team gone, the Rays called up key players Willy Adames, Jake Bauers, and traded for a bunch of prospects to call up from their minor league affiliate, the Durham Bulls.

The team was desperate for good players for offense and defense. People were saying the Rays were going to be a horrible team. Some people even said they wouldn’t win 60 games. The Rays shocked the whole world by ending their season this fall with over 85 wins. They had an unbelievable season despite the team having mostly rookies.

The team could have even gone on to play in the playoffs if they were in the National League but they are in the American League East with some of the toughest teams in the MLB such as the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles. The Rays ended this season in third place but they were so close to getting the second wild card spot. However, the Oakland Athletics team clinched the spot and they will face the New York Yankees to see who will play in the American League Division Series.

The Rays were led by star pitcher, Blake Snell, who set a franchise record for most wins in a single season for a Rays pitcher passing David Price’s twenty wins in 2012 when he won the Cy Young award. Snell will be talked about in the Cy Young candidate race for the American League this year.

With such a surprise ending to this amazing Rays season, this sports fan wonders what is in store for next season. Here’s hoping to a playoff spot!

African Fashion Comes to Tampa Bay

This is a couple’s outfit. Both incorporating floral patterns, his near his collar and hers around her hips.

Angelique Robinson

This is a couple’s outfit. Both incorporating floral patterns, his near his collar and hers around her hips.

Tampa, Fla.–On Saturday, Sept. 22, at the AC Marriott Hotel, an African Fashions pop-up show was held. There were also clothes, jewelry and handbags for sale before and after the fashion show.

There were eight models in total, seven women and one man. The women varied in height, shades and sizes. Each had multiple outfits all suited to their body shapes and skin tones.

The best piece in the line was one of the early pieces in the show. This was a one shoulder top made of carnation pink chiffon fabric. The bottom was a long, vibrant, yellow skirt that flowed instead of being skin tight. On the skirt were large pink and orange carnations. The way all the warm colors work together to make the eyes wander the outfit is what makes the outfit so brilliant.

While this piece was more sophisticated, another great piece was designed for a much more casual outing. The eye-catching part of the outfit was the cloak-like jacket, similar to what little red riding hood wore. The hooded cloak had wavy stripes in various shades of blue and aqua, orange and white. Underneath was a black hater top and a pair of black leggings, to make the cloak the center of the show.

There were some pieces that were not as strong. One of them was a knee length dress that had dark and light blue stripes contrasting each other with a shape resembling an over easy egg in two shades of pink scattered across the dress. The shades did not complement each other, and the pattern shape did not make the dress easy to look at.

I thought that the complete line looked beautiful. African fashions utilize colors and patterns which gives variety to an otherwise bland fashion world. The African fashion designers do things that many European and American designers are too afraid to; they use at least three different colors in every piece.

Red Tide Explained

Red Tide Explained

Tampa Bay, Fla.–Every year red tide arises along the west coast of Florida and sometimes on the Atlantic side of the Florida coast at the end of summer and beginning of fall. Red tide kills and destroys marine wildlife and even effects businesses and tourism near the beaches impacted by red tide. However, this year specifically, red tide’s damages are particularly devastating.

Red tide, or harmful algae blooms, occur when toxins are released by algae blooms causing a discoloration in the water. The toxins from the algae blooms kill fish, and harm marine mammals and birds. Red tide can last between a few weeks or longer than a year.

This year, red tide crept up on to the Florida coast around Aug. 5 and 6 and is mainly affecting Florida’s gulf coast.

Many animals are impacted by red tides every year, including: fish, manatees, dolphins, turtles, birds, and several others. Red tide has killed 174 manatees and over 300 sea turtles this year because of how toxic the bloom is.

According to the New York Times, the medical and research director for the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Dr. Heather Barron, has seen a higher number of animals being affected by red tide this year.

“The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife has seen a 25 percent increase in patients compared with this time last year,” said Dr. Barron.

Humans can be affected by red tide as well. The air around red tide areas can cause sneezing, coughing and tearing. However, those who have emphysema or asthma may have a harder time breathing and need to be especially careful.

Due to red tide, beaches are seeing less tourists and businesses are getting less customers. On a normal day you can see a beach filled with people at 12p.m.; however, red tide has scared away tourists and businesses are feeling that affect.

The Florida Wildlife Commission is trying to help save animals found alive on the shore. They house the animals in rehab facilities until the toxin is out of their systems.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency due to red tide. Scott has promised $1.5 million in emergency funding to help take care of the crisis.
