Taylor Swift Feuds with Big Machine Label Group

Swift's struggle with Big Machine continues amidst the pandemic.

Ten months after a very public social media feud, Taylor Swift is begging fans not to buy her new album- Live From Clear Channel Stripped 2008-a recording of her 2008 live radio performance.  Swift claims the album is being released by Big Machine Label Group without her consent and is “just another case of shameless greed in the time of Coronavirus.”

In the Instagram story, Swift claims entertainment executive Scott “Scooter” Braun is broke after buying Big Machine Records which gave him control of her previous masters- a collection of over 90 of her hits.

“It looks to me like Scooter Braun and his financial backers, 23 Capital, Alex Soros and the Soros family, and the Carlyle Group have seen the latest balance sheets and realized that paying $300 million for my music wasn’t exactly a wise choice and they need money,” she said in the post.

The music mayhem began in June of 2019 when Braun and his group bought Big Machine Label Group from Scott Borchetta, who signed Swift at the start of her career when she was 15.  Braun already owned the music from Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Kanye West (West and Tay-Tay have had an equally public singer’s spat for the last 11 years).  She has accused Braun of backing her social media “bullies,” such as Bieber and West, causing her hostility towards the sale.

The record deal row continued into the winter when Swift was nominated for Artist of the Decade by the American Music Academy.  Her performance on the nationally televised awards program was set to include the songs she had written over the last ten years, such as Shake It Off and Love Story.  Braun, however, argued she could not do so, at least, not without permission from the Big Machine Label Group.

After Swift used her fan base, dubbed “Swifties,” to beg Braun to let her perform her own music, Braun gave into the demands of the social media protest and allowed Swift to perform her hits at the awards show.

Braun said, after the concession, that he would not participate in the social media drama but posted his response on Instagram later that day.  In the lengthy Instagram post, Braun urged Swift to meet with him so he could talk to her personally.  He referenced death threats he and his family have received since their spat made headlines and said he never intended to make her feel “cornered or bullied.”

Swift seemed to address the spat with Braun when she opened with her new single “The Man,” wearing a t-shirt with the titles of her albums now owned by Braun.  While she did not directly mention Braun, like Taylor’s refrains, the message was loud and clear- she and Braun were never ever getting back together.

The singers’ squabble prompted other celebrities to take sides, but the alliances were predictable.  Swift’s best friend Selena Gomez and other supporters, such as Halsey, publicly declared their allegiance to Miss Americana, while Braun’s clients, such as Kanye West, sided with the entertainment executive.

Since the sale to Braun, Swift, whose deal with Big Machine expired, has signed with Universal Music Group/Republic, who says she will own the rights to all her future masters recorded with them.  However, the April 2020 release of the radio performance proves the pop singer has no control over her original masters and will be forced to fight with Braun if she hopes to ever control them again.

Award Season Begins with the 62nd Grammy Awards

With 15 Grammys, Alicia Keys took the stage to host the Grammys for thee second time, her first time being in 2019.

With 15 Grammys, Alicia Keys took the stage to host the Grammys for thee second time, her first time being in 2019.

Musical artists came together on January 26, 2020 for the 62nd annual Grammy Awards, at the Staples Center, to celebrate their achievements in the music industry. There were many highlights of the award show, but the one that stood out at the Grammys was the musical tributes to the late basketball star, Kobe Bryant, who was killed in a helicopter accident along with his daughter earlier that day.

To kick off the show, pop singer, Lizzo, dedicated her performance and the show to Kobe Bryant. Not only did Lizzo recognize Kobe Bryant in her performance, but so did Alicia Keys.

The host of the 62nd Grammy Awards, Alicia Keys, sang along beside Boyz II Men to sing “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday,” to honor Kobe Bryant and his daughter. By doing this, the singers and the audience rooted the memory of Kobe Bryant into the awards ceremony that night. Even through this sad time, Alicia Keys was still able to set the stage for the show to start.

The night was filled with jaw dropping performances from many artists such as Camila Cabello, Aerosmith, and Arianna Grande. Beyond these performances, artist collaboration created some amazing performances at the Grammys. For example, Lil Nas X performed his hit single “Old Town Road” with Mason Ramsey, Billy Ray Cyrus, and the K-pop boy band group, BTS.

This seems like an odd collaboration on paper, but in reality, they are all outstanding together on stage. Even singers from extremely different genres performed together to make outstanding songs for the show. For example, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani collaborated together to sing their new single, “Nobody But You,” at the Grammys.

Many artists decided to sing their most successful hits that have already debuted, but several other performers chose to bring brand new songs to the table. Singers like Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers introduced a variety of new singles at the Grammys.

While the Grammys were chock-full of fantastic performances, it would not be the Grammys without the actual awards themselves. There were many categories at the Grammys such as Best Music Video, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Pop Solo Performance, and so many more.

With all of these categories, there are mainly four that are not specific to one single genre: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. This year all four of these categories had the same winner, Billie Eilish.

This successful singer is only 18 years old, and has already blown away her competition at her first Grammy Awards with winning all of these categories and more. Billie Eilish was not the only winner of the night though; there were lots of winners throughout the whole night including Lizzo, Dan + Shay, Willie Nelson, and so many more.

The 62nd annual Grammy Awards were jam packed with awards, celebrities, and most importantly music. With the success of this year’s Grammy Awards, there is no doubt that next year will be even better than ever.

The rap industry loses another artist

Juice+Wrld+gained+immense+popularity+from+his+single+%22Lucid+Dreams.%22

TMZ

Juice Wrld gained immense popularity from his single "Lucid Dreams."

In the rap industry, it is difficult for upcoming rappers to gain fame. Nowadays, rappers are coming from small apps like SoundCloud or Spotify, expecting to become legends, although reaching legend status takes time, dedication, and effort. Many rappers now are writing more emotional lyrics to prove a point or be inspirational.

For example, XXXtencion is known by young adults and teens for being more relatable and emotional. Sadly, there is a more twisted side in being a rapper. Many rappers involve themselves in salacious activities, ranging from drugs to gang affiliation. Even though XXXtencion was young, fresh, and on the verge of becoming one of the best rappers of the time, he was shot because of being involved in salacious activities.

But more recently, Juice Wrld, a young rapper as well, who had just recently signed with the major record label Interscope Records, died on Dec. 8 after suffering cardiac arrest at a private hangar at Midway Airport.

Around 2 a.m., according to the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said, “Paramedics were called to hanger operated by Atlantic Aviation.”

Juice Wrld‘s real name is Jarad Higgins, passing away just six days after turning 21. Higgins died just after he arrived at Midway on a private jet. Higgins was immediately taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where they announced his death at 3:14 a.m.

It was determined that Higgins died after having a seizure. Many of his fans believed that he was faking his death. Not to long before his unexpected death, he posted on Instagram that his lifetime goal was to successfully fake his death. Juice Wrld’s younger audience believes that this was his doing to shine brighter and become famous, but he suffered a seizure and began bleeding from his mouth. The cause of his seizure is not yet known. The medical experts who examined the body, did find traces of drugs but more tests are required to confirm.

When Higgins was still in school, he left a huge mark in the schools he attended. The teachers and staffs always knew him to be highly creative and talented in what he does best, make music. Higgins was a very caring person even before he was famous, he would make sure someone was okay if he noticed something was wrong with them. His former teachers, staff, and classmates always thought he was a generous and hardworking; they are very devasted that Higgins is gone now, and he will be remembered by many people who looked up to him.

R. Kelly accused of sexual assault

R.+Kelly+accused+of+sexual+assault

Robert Kelly, famous R&B singer who goes by R. Kelly, has been accused of sexually assaulting and preying on young black teenagers specifically, for the past twenty years. Now, with the largely established #MeToo movement, R. Kelly’s alleged crimes are brought to the forefront of the public’s attention as women continually share their stories of his alleged sexual abuse done unto them.

Most prominently the Lifetime special “Surviving R. Kelly” has created controversy regarding R. Kelly’s alleged crimes against young black women. Many take to social media to share their opinions on: whether Kelly is guilty or not, and assuming he is guilty, whether his music should be muted or respected based on a separation from Kelly’s character.

Celebrities such as Taraji P. Henson and Erykah Badu’s morals have been called into question online. Henson claims that her statements about Kelly were misconstrued and she is in full support of the alleged victims. Badu, contrarily, has been criticized for her rumored refusal to take part in “Surviving R. Kelly,” which producer, Dream Hampton, asked her to join.

Although, Kelly has never been found guilty on any counts, many accusations have been made against him; in 1994 Kelly married an underage Aaliyah while she was just 15 and he was 24, in 1996 Kelly was sued by Tiffany Hawkins for sexual misconduct, in January of 2001 Kelly was indicted on child porn charges and found not guilty, in August of 2001 Tracy Sampson sued R. Kelly for alleged sexual abuse, in 2002 Patrice Jones sued Kelly for assaulting her when she was 16, and in May of 2002 Motina Woods sued Kelly for taping their sexual encounter without her consent. Kelly settled all cases of sexual assault and misconduct brought against him and many of the women signed non-disclosure agreements.

Kelly’s avoidance of any legal repercussions is not definitive proof of his innocence and does not indicate, as many argue, that the women who have shared their stories are lying. According to BBC.com only about 8 percent of all rape accusations are false. This percentage being much smaller than the number of rapes which go unreported each year.

The controversy surrounding R. Kelly in the media right now, regardless of his stance as an innocent or guilty man, could be detrimental to his career and may forever damage his image as a respected artist.

BTS’ impact is spreading worldwide

BTS%27+impact+is+spreading+worldwide

love-myself.org

As the time passes, BTS’ impact on the world is steadily expanding. Their fanbase is unmatched, their loyal supporters residing all over the planet.

BTS’ songs hold powerful messages and the group addresses important topics such as mental health, societal pressures, self-expression, and loneliness in their lyrics. Their socially conscious lyrics and authentic and humble personalities are what draws most of their fans to them.

The group is very passionate about self-love, their recent album series, Love Yourself projecting a message of self-advocacy. The series ends on a hopeful note, highlighting the importance of loving yourself.

In September, BTS spoke at the United Nations for UNICEF’s Generation Unlimited launch, with RM giving a powerful speech on the significance of having your own voice and speaking for yourself instead of letting others speak for you.

“No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin color, gender identity: speak yourself,” said RM. “Find your name, find your voice by speaking yourself.”

In November of 2017, BTS entered into a partnership with UNICEF Korea and began the Love Myself campaign. The campaign is focused toward ending violence and spreading love in the world. All funds raised during the two-year collaboration will go toward protecting adolescent victims of domestic and sexual assault and providing educational opportunities in local communities.

It has been brought up multiple times that BTS is playing a role in redefining masculinity and erasing barriers that limit what an individual can and cannot do or be based on their gender. During a Billboard interview, the interviewer brought up the fact that the songs on the Love Yourself: Her album seemed to be gender neutral.

“I was reading the lyrics are gender neutral, which I think is really powerful,” said the interviewer. “Was that a conscious decision?”

RM replied, “The lyrics were based on rare and special things in life. So, I thought, those feelings transcend genders, cultures and barriers between people.”

Western audiences have a preconceived notion of what men should look and act like. Self-care and precise attention to appearance are considered feminine by Western standards, but BTS defies all of these ideas, sporting full-face makeup and impeccable fashions.

In 2016, BTS did a photo shoot for Singles Magazine in which they dressed in skirts and fishnets in open protest of gender norms.

There is a long-standing toxic belief that men should not cry or show emotion. BTS’ emotional vulnerability and authenticity in their lyrics goes against this belief and encourages others to disregard predetermined gender roles and live their lives the way that they desire.

In Suga’s song, ‘The Last’, recorded under his solo stage name, Agust D, he opens up about his struggles with depression, OCD, and social anxiety, including lyrics such as, “On the other side of the famous idol rapper stands my weak self, it’s a bit dangerous. Depression, OCD, they keep coming back from time to time.”

This degree of honesty and openness is uncommon for Korean hip-hop artists, who typically practice censorship when it comes to personal feelings such as these.

Even out of the studio, BTS is very vocal about their views on the importance of mental health. There is a long-standing stigma in Korea around mental health that prevents many people from seeking help and BTS’ outspokenness about sensitive subjects such as this defies all notions that individuals should keep their feelings hidden.

In a Billboard interview, BTS spoke up about mental health after the suicide of Jonghyun, a member of the K-Pop group, SHINee.

“I really want to say that everyone in the world is lonely and everyone is sad,” said Suga, “and if we know that everyone is suffering and lonely, I hope we can create an environment where we can ask for help, and say things are hard when they’re hard, and say that we miss someone when we miss them.”

The new wave of musicians and innovators like BTS bring new hope to the world and have the potential to change the music industry forever.

Keeping up with the Borns

Keeping up with the Borns

Everyone loves unique and new music. We all crave the feeling of hearing a sound of something that is completely unique and fresh. We all crave the overwhelming sensation of Dopamine. We all crave an artist like Garrett Borns.

Garret Borns (BORNS is his stage name) is a 26-year old indie-rock artist that has a very unique style to his music. In 2012, he released a debut album called “A Dream Between”. Since then, his career took off. Three years later in 2015, BORNS released another album, called “Dopamine”. The name was inspired by a chemical that is released when a person feels a strong sense of longing, “The old ‘you want most what you can’t have’ expression,” BORNS explains himself. Earlier this year, the artist released a new album, this one being called “Blue Madonna”, featuring other artists, such as Lana Del Ray. BORNS has been very successful in the past from his two albums, Dopamine, which was released in 2015, and Blue Madonna, which was released earlier this year.

But let’s start from the beginning. In 1992, BORNS was, well, born. All throughout his childhood he was drawn to music. As a teen, he began to write his own music and find his own sound. In 2011, BORNS spoke on TEDX TALKS about a trip he took to Paris to get inspiration, and inspiration is what he found. BORNS discusses how on his trip he made connections with people that didn’t even speak English, and how it was music that brought people together. “The ultimate language of love is music, it’s the ultimate connector,” BORNS explains.

Novemberfest 2018 in review

This is the popular Rock N' Roll ride.

Angelique Robinson

This is the popular Rock N' Roll ride.

Brandon, Fla.- Nativity Catholic Church holds Novemberfest every year, approximately a week before Thanksgiving. This year’s event lasted from November 14-18. Each year the event attracts lots of people of all ages but especially high schoolers. At Novemberfest there are always rides, food, live concerts, raffles and games.

The event had rides that everyone can enjoy. There are two funhouses for kids to enjoy, one the one every fair has and then a Mario themed one with obstacles. Also available for kids were the rides with cars going in circles, they had the toddler version and the one for elementary school children, there was also a merry go round and the spinning dragons.

For teens and adults most of the rides involve spinning. Rides like Zero Gravity and Alien Abduction are two of the rides that spin quickly, the only difference being that one rotates as it spins. These types of rides are not for the light of heart.

Sadly, however many fan favorites were missing from this year’s event. The event lacked a Tilt-A-Whirl, Bumper Cars, and a few others. These being gone caused longer lines at other favorites like Typhoon and Rock’N’Roll to be longer than usual.

There were lots of classic carnival games and prizes to be won. All around the event people could be seen with the various prizes from all the games. The most frequent prize was goldfish, coincidently they were prizes at the fishbowl game, where you throw a ping-pong ball into the tiny fishbowls.

There were less food options than usual, especially when it came to desserts. Several teens complained that the stand that usually sold all the deep-fried candies and treats was not present this year, leaving desserts to cotton candy, caramel apples and funnel cakes. Aside from this there were still plenty of options for food. There were classic fair foods like corndogs, hotdogs, pizza or fries, but there were exotic things, like Polish and Indian food options.

Raffles and the live band performances occurred under a big white tent. There were lots of different artists that performed over the five days of the event. Genres for the performers vastly varied from a children’s chorus to a local rock band.

Overall people seemed to enjoy the event as there were still about a thousand people at the event. All around the site friends and families could be seen enjoying their time together.

BTS closes out their U.S. tour with a record-breaking performance at New York’s Citi-Field

BTS closes out their U.S. tour with a record-breaking performance at New York’s Citi-Field

New York Times

BTS fans from across the country flocked to the Citi Field in New York City this past weekend to watch the wildly famous K-pop group’s final performance in the North American leg of their ‘Love Yourself’ tour.

Tickets for the show went on sale on Aug. 17 and were sold out in under 15 minutes. A groundbreaking 55,000 of BTS’ ARMY filled the famous stadium on the night of Oct. 6, making BTS the first Korean group to perform and sell out a U.S. stadium show.

Fans of the group were at the field preparing for the show all throughout this past week. According to Billboard, around 1,500 fans camped out in the Citi Field parking lot beginning as early as this previous Monday.

After the concert kicked off with the band performing their song ‘Idol’, the group spoke to the fans, expressing their gratitude for ARMY’s support and their excitement for getting to perform at Citi Field. RM, the leader of BTS, ended the brief greeting by asking fans to be mindful of each other during the concert for safety.

The band gave a revolutionary show, performing their newer songs from their ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ album as well as some of their older hits.

The ARMY expressed their enthusiasm for the band by singing along and waving their ARMY bombs, which are the official light sticks used by BTS fans at any concert or performance that BTS does.

The group spoke to the fans in English for the majority of the show, but Jimin and Suga spoke briefly in Korean at the end, sincerely thanking their fans.

The band was set to perform in London on Oct. 9, commencing the European leg of their world tour.

Saves The Day releases New Album titled “9,” pays tribute to the band’s career

Saves The Day

Saves The Day is an American rock band that originated in 1997 in the state of New Jersey. They are well-known for their hit albums Through Being Cool (1999) and Stay What You Are (2001) which received very positive reception from both critics and fans. With darker themed lyrics combined with melodic hooks that catch the listener’s attention, Saves The Day has influenced many hit rock bands that will eventually make their own mark on the music industry.

Following their pop-punk release of the self-titled album, Saves The Day (2013), the band is back with a brand new album titled “9,” out of respect for the release being the ninth studio album officially produced by Saves The Day.

Saves The Day’s frontman, Chris Conley, took a different approach when he wrote the newest album. While their 2013 release featured more lighthearted songs with pop-punk vibes that differentiate the record from their past albums, 9 tells the story the band’s journey over the years. This time around, Conley sings of “walking the crescent moon castles in English sand” and “20 years go by like pages from a calendar blowing in the wind.”

From the early beginnings of the Can’t Slow Down tours to the current state of the band, Conley covers it all. The record’s run-time clocks in at about 44 minutes and features the song “29” that runs at about 21-minutes to describe Conley’s entire personal journey.

Below you can find the full tracklisting of 9 and a link to Saves The Day’s lead single for 9, titled “Rendezvous.”

Weezer releases New Single “Can’t Knock The Hustle” for highly anticipated “The Black Album”

Weezer

Weezer

Back in late May, the quirky alternative rock band, Weezer, released a massive hit cover of Toto’s “Africa” after a campaign of fans who wanted to see their favorite rock band perform their favorite song. The campaign, led by Twitter user, “@weezerafrica,” reached it’s milestone success after Weezer finally released the hit song “Africa” following a cover of Toto’“Rosanna.”

Weezer’s frontman, Rivers Cuomo, discussed in many past interviews of a future project titled The Black Album. The Black Album was planned on being a successor to 2016’s hit The White Album, while contrasting itself from White’s beachy rock themes for a darker urban theme.

Cuomo stated, “The next album is going to feel like an urban environment, night-time and gritty and hopefully a lot more modern sounds, synthesized sounds, samples maybe. I like to break away from the distorted power-chord thing but it’s hard ‘cos it works so well.”

Due to 2017’s Pacific Daydream and “Africa” creating a delay for  The Black Album, many fans were left anxious for Weezer to unveil it’s new material centering it’s mysterious twelfth studio album.

This past Thursday, however, Weezer finally gave it’s fans a taste of what is to come for the upcoming LP. The single, “Can’t Stop The Hustle,” takes listeners into the dark and funky groove of Rivers Cuomo’s mind.

If you want to support Weezer and their upcoming The Black Album, download or stream the new single here.

Boy Band Releases Catchy New Song

Boy Band Releases Catchy New Song

Tampa Bay, Fla.–The boy band PRETTYMUCH, one of Simon Cowell’s boy bands released a new song on Friday. The title of the song is Solita, which means alone or lonely in Spanish. The song also featured rapper Rich the Kid.

The song has a nice tempo, making it easy to dance to. The song fits their style of including hip-hop and Latin pop into their music. The tempo also fits the message of dancing solving some of the hardships a person may be facing.

The drawback of the song is that one of the member’s goals is underused. Austin typically does raps and deeper parts of their songs. On this song he only sings in the intro and outro in the background of Rich the Kid. His deep voice would have been much use to the chorus, as it slows slightly and gets deeper.

I recommend the song to anyone who likes music that uplift their soul or that they can dance and sing along to. The song would bring a smile to the face and take the burden off any rough day. The band has other songs that capture a similar essence
