Disney Springs Prepares to Reopen

As Florida eases social distancing regulations, Disney Springs will be the first major attraction in Florida to reopen.

As Florida eases social distancing regulations, Disney Springs will be the first major attraction in Florida to reopen.

On Thursday, May 7, Walt Disney World Company made a statement that they will begin to reopen the Disney Springs shopping center in accordance with the current government and CDC guidelines in place.

The parks had originally closed on March 15, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic as an effort to help flatten the curve and keep guests safe. Late evening on Thursday, the Vice President of Disney Springs Matt Simon announced the partial reopening of Disney Springs.

The area will begin opening by using a series of phases making sure to keep all cast members, employees, and guests as safe as possible. No word has yet been stated on what exact stores or restaurants will be opening at this time.

The reopening of the springs is scheduled to begin on May 20, 2020, while the rest of the theme parks are currently planning on remaining closed with no plan to reopen in the near future. The initial opening phase will include limitations on capacity, parking, and operating hours.

The reopening will have new implemented safety measures including increased cleaning procedures, face coverings required by members of the cast and the visiting guests, and limited contact with guest services. Cast members will be required to attend additional safety training to help prepare for the reopening and return to work.

Simon states that the company will begin to use “learnings and ideas from leaders in the health and travel industries” and has been communicating with their unions on the proper ways to go about the shopping center’s reopening.

According to FOX 35, the reopening of the center will be partially modeled after the reopening at Shanghai’s Disney Town, a modified version of Disney Springs, which had reopened in early March, and Shanghai’s Disneyland, set to open May 11.

The measures that were put in place on this park included a limited capacity of 30%, requirements for getting guests temperature checked at all entrances, and mandatory masks to be worn by guests. FOX 35 also states that visitors will be required to pass a health screening via a mobile app.  Many await the results of this opening in hopes of it shortening the timeline of the phases, causing the parks to open quicker.

Disney plans additional information considering procedures and protocols to be announced closer to the opening date. As the date draws closer they recommend checking  DisneySprings.com for more up to date information.

Taylor Swift Feuds with Big Machine Label Group

Swift's struggle with Big Machine continues amidst the pandemic.

Kevin Winter/Getty Images

Swift's struggle with Big Machine continues amidst the pandemic.

Ten months after a very public social media feud, Taylor Swift is begging fans not to buy her new album- Live From Clear Channel Stripped 2008-a recording of her 2008 live radio performance.  Swift claims the album is being released by Big Machine Label Group without her consent and is “just another case of shameless greed in the time of Coronavirus.”

In the Instagram story, Swift claims entertainment executive Scott “Scooter” Braun is broke after buying Big Machine Records which gave him control of her previous masters- a collection of over 90 of her hits.

“It looks to me like Scooter Braun and his financial backers, 23 Capital, Alex Soros and the Soros family, and the Carlyle Group have seen the latest balance sheets and realized that paying $300 million for my music wasn’t exactly a wise choice and they need money,” she said in the post.

The music mayhem began in June of 2019 when Braun and his group bought Big Machine Label Group from Scott Borchetta, who signed Swift at the start of her career when she was 15.  Braun already owned the music from Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Kanye West (West and Tay-Tay have had an equally public singer’s spat for the last 11 years).  She has accused Braun of backing her social media “bullies,” such as Bieber and West, causing her hostility towards the sale.

The record deal row continued into the winter when Swift was nominated for Artist of the Decade by the American Music Academy.  Her performance on the nationally televised awards program was set to include the songs she had written over the last ten years, such as Shake It Off and Love Story.  Braun, however, argued she could not do so, at least, not without permission from the Big Machine Label Group.

After Swift used her fan base, dubbed “Swifties,” to beg Braun to let her perform her own music, Braun gave into the demands of the social media protest and allowed Swift to perform her hits at the awards show.

Braun said, after the concession, that he would not participate in the social media drama but posted his response on Instagram later that day.  In the lengthy Instagram post, Braun urged Swift to meet with him so he could talk to her personally.  He referenced death threats he and his family have received since their spat made headlines and said he never intended to make her feel “cornered or bullied.”

Swift seemed to address the spat with Braun when she opened with her new single “The Man,” wearing a t-shirt with the titles of her albums now owned by Braun.  While she did not directly mention Braun, like Taylor’s refrains, the message was loud and clear- she and Braun were never ever getting back together.

The singers’ squabble prompted other celebrities to take sides, but the alliances were predictable.  Swift’s best friend Selena Gomez and other supporters, such as Halsey, publicly declared their allegiance to Miss Americana, while Braun’s clients, such as Kanye West, sided with the entertainment executive.

Since the sale to Braun, Swift, whose deal with Big Machine expired, has signed with Universal Music Group/Republic, who says she will own the rights to all her future masters recorded with them.  However, the April 2020 release of the radio performance proves the pop singer has no control over her original masters and will be forced to fight with Braun if she hopes to ever control them again.

A CW Limited Series Reflects COVID-19 Conditions

Like many CW shows, this one captivates audiences from the start.

Courtesy of the CW

Like many CW shows, this one captivates audiences from the start.

In 2016 the CW aired a show called “Containment,” the show only had one season with 13, 42 minute episodes. The show is based on the Belgian show Cordon that aired in 2014. The show follows the outbreak of a deadly virus in Atlanta, and to limit the spread the CDC sets up a cordon sanitaire. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the series reflects the harsh realities society is dealing with. The show is more enjoyable as the audience can relate to being contained.

There are very few flaws within the show. My biggest grievance with the show is the lack of resolution at the end. Viewers of the show never receive closure for how the epidemic ends or what happens to the characters. While there is an inspirational speech that ends the season, it does not truly resolve anything for the remaining characters.

My secondary grievance is that some of the science is a little messy. The virus mutates quicker than possible in real life. Within days of the outbreak there are multiple strands of the virus being transmitted. Also, when the show begins experimenting with a cure, the rules of blood transfusions went out the window. To receive a blood transfusion both the donor and the recipient must have the same blood type, otherwise the antibodies will attack the new blood, hurting the recipient rather than helping.

The show does a lot of things very well. The characters are one of the show’s best aspects. There is so much diversity, various races, ages and socio-economic classes represented within the show. The characters are easy to relate to and sympathize with. For example, one of the protagonists, Major Lex Carnahan, is just a police officer trying to do his duties, while dealing with the fact that the love of his life is stuck within the cordon. Many people during social distancing can relate to being separated from loved ones.

The show also does a good job of showing how the government would handle an epidemic. The government takes the necessary action to prevent the spread of the virus. They kept the cordon up and encouraged isolation, despite the anger of those being quarantined, the government remained firm in their solutions, something our governments can learn from.

The show also does a wonderful job of showing how dangerous a virus can be. The show takes the time to explain how the virus is spread so easily in an urban society, the show emphasizes the spread of the disease through all bodily fluids. A sneeze or a kiss would be enough to get infected.

In addition to the transmission, the show explains the origins of the virus and how it was created, but that would be a major spoiler. The origins of the virus, the conspiracy and the truth are both real fears of the government and general public. The virus itself is not a major spoiler, so the virus is a manipulated strand of avian flu. This shows the dangers of manipulating diseases because it could escape and start an epidemic,

While the disease in the show is quite gruesome as the deaths involve blood and whole body tremors, it is still an interesting show that combines sci-fi, romance, action and drama. While not all characters receive happy endings, the show is worth the investment. If you are bored during social distancing, it is one of many CW shows that can be found on Netflix.

Series Returning to Netflix in March

Greenhouse+Acaddemy+is+based+on+an+old+Israeli+television+show+called+%22The+Greenhouse.%22+The+show+is+also+filmed+in+Israel.

Netflix

Greenhouse Acaddemy is based on an old Israeli television show called "The Greenhouse." The show is also filmed in Israel.

On February 18, Netflix announced the release of new seasons for some of their most popular Netflix originals. Each new season will be released in mid-March.

The first show Netflix announced was their international series, “Elite,” originating in Spain. The show follows the life of the students of an elite private school, where three poor students attend on scholarship as a result of a freak accident at their previous school.

The first season retraces the steps of all the main characters leading up to a murder, the second season retraces the students’ steps leading up to a missing person. This will be the show’s third season and based on the trailer, the season will follow the students’ lives leading up to another murder.

Fans did not have to wait long for Netflix to bring this third season to the screen, as season two was released on September 6, 2019, only creating a six month wait. The third season will be on Netflix on March 13, in time for many students to binge while on Spring Break.

Based on teasers released on the show’s Instagram, there are at least two new characters, which seems to be consistent, as two more characters were added at the start of season two season which males sense as characters die or go missing during the season. As of yet the roles of the new characters is unknown. Fans can find their names and the trailer on the show’s Instagram page.

The second show Netflix announced a release date for is the popular show “On My Block.” Fans of this show have waited almost a year for the release date of the next season. Like “Elite,” the new season of “On My Block” will be its third. The third season will be available for viewers on March 11.

The show is about living in the “ghetto,” a neighborhood riddled with gangs and violence. The show pokes fun at the stereotypes but also shows both the good and awful parts of living in these kinds of neighborhoods by solving the riddles of the neighborhood. Based on the recently released trailer, the main charachters have been kidnapped and have to solve another riddle to save their lives.

The third show Netflix announced a release date for is the show “Greenhouse Academy.” Fans of the show had a shorter wait than “Elite” fans, as season three of “Greenhouse Academy” was released October 25, 2019.

It seems Netflix did not want upset fans with a second extended wait, as there was a year and half wait between season two and three. The fourth season of “Greenhouse Academy” will be released on March 20.

The show centers around a competitive school for the intelligently and athletically gifted. There are  nefarious activities going on behind the scenes and the students will use their skills to uncover the truth. Not much is known about the fourth season as Netflix has not released a season trailer as of yet.

All of these shows center around the life of teenagers in a variety of situations and contexts. Fans are ecstatic for the upcoming seasons of these shows. These are among the top watched Netflix original series. March will be an excellent month for those who enjoy binge watching.

Aladdin The Musical comes to Tampa

Aladdin the musical is a Braoday musical that tours the world, showcasing their talent acoss the globe.

Broadway.org

Aladdin the musical is a Braoday musical that tours the world, showcasing their talent acoss the globe.

The iconic 1992 Disney classic, Aladdin, became an on-stage production to bring the mystical city of Agrabar to audiences across the country in 2011.  In December, the 2019 Aladdin Tour brought the story of a “street rat’s” efforts to win Princess Jasmine’s heart to Morsani Hall in Tampa’s Straz Center.

The magical experience began at the doors when guests were met by enthusiastic greeters to be directed to their seats and to various locations inside the center for commemorative pictures.  The adaptation included 11 more songs than the original Tim Rice animated screenplay.

The new songs developed Aladdin’s character, played by Jonah Ho’okano, and motivation to become more than a “street rat” in a rendition of “Proud of Your Boy” which Aladdin emotionally dedicated to his mother. The emotional new songs not only gave the actors more solos but provided insight and back story of the characters that the animated version did not.

Kaenaon Alani Kekoa’s powerful, yet fluid voice filled the stage in her first song as Jasmine with “These Palace Walls.”  While her solos stood out, her voice was overshadowed and lost in her duets with childhood friend Ho’okano, whose seven years of experience showed in his flawless performance.

The on-stage adaptation included three friends for Aladdin to fill in for Abu, Aladdin’s monkey sidekick in the animated movie.  However, Babkak (Zach Bencal), Omar (Ben Chavez), and Kassim (Colt Prattes) were irrelevant and seemed to be randomly tossed in throughout the duration of the play.  Prattes’s emphatic voice, however, emerged in his solos of the songs the trio sang and saved the scenes the friends were in, but their roles seemed incongruous and mistimed to the storyline.

Korie Lee Blossey, who played Genie, and Ho’okano had indisputable chemistry.  Their dialogue seemed genuine and flowed naturally as their jokes bounced off each other, like a veteran comedy team.  In one of his scenes with Genie, Ho’okano broke character and laughed at a few of Genie’s jokes before regaining his composure.  The natural friendship between the actors made Aladdin’s scenes with Genie the best part of the play.

Iago (Reggie De Leon), Jafar’s sidekick, was overly dramatic and his performance took away from what should have been more serious scenes.  His part, like Aladdin’s friends, could have been left out of the show entirely. Genie begged for applause and laughs at the beginning by trying to rally the crowd, seemingly sitting on their hands, after some of his jokes didn’t land.  Although his performance was not comparable to Robin William’s (but then again, whose could be?), he played the part well and tied the scenes together seamlessly.

The sets designed for the play were terribly underdone.  The marketplace was far too simple and the small ensemble didn’t compensate for the lacking backdrop.  The same was true for the scenes in the palace.

The palace should have been elegant, as it was the palace of a sultan, but instead was disappointing and simple.  By comparison, however, the scene in the Cave of Wonders was exaggerated, a stark contrast to the rest of the play.  The Cave of Wonders shouldn’t have been the scene to have the large set since it was only used for one scene. The simple sets allowed the elegant and colorful costumes to stand out but was ultimately disappointing.

Nichole Sullivan saw the performance for the second time on December 26th and said, “I like it better than the first time I saw it…I saw it the first time and I think I expected it to be amazing, but I was a little disappointed.”  She said her expectations were lower this time, which made this performance more enjoyable.

“The tour will be coming to a close in April, and the reason being is that this show itself is just too big to fit other stages,” said Matthew Watson, a member of the orchestra.  Michelle West, an ensemble member of the production, explained that the show can only fit a few stages which limits the tour to a few cities in the country.

Overall, the Broadway adaptation of Aladdin, in true Disney fashion, fulfilled all expectations, providing a unique on-stage Disney experience for Aladdin and Disney fans.

Netflix Navarro’s Cheer Essence

Cheer was uploaded to Netflix on January 8, 2020. Fans are already eager for a season two.

Madeline Hull

Cheer was uploaded to Netflix on January 8, 2020. Fans are already eager for a season two.

The show “Cheer” was added to Netflix in 2020, many cheerleaders have become fans and are hoping for a second season after the first season unlike “Cheer Squad”.

“Cheer Squad” was released in 2016Netflix released one season of the show and it was discontinued soon after. Many fans were disappointed to see that the show was cancelled after forming attachments to the athletes throughout the seasonThe viewers consisted mostly of cheerleaders, coaches, and parents that have kids involved or wanting to be involved in the sport. They were able to relate closely with the athletes while they improve on their skills during practice and competitions. Being able to see how the team handled tough practices and how they were able to bond with their coaches and teammates to work together.

The new series “Cheer” captures Navarro’s college cheer team during practices, school functions, and competitions. It shows how the athletes keep up with cheer and college studies but also largely capitalizes how hard each athlete trainand dedicatethemselves to being part of this incredible team. Navarro cheer holds the title of 2019 NCA national champions along with more awards from years past. NCA is their biggest competition, which is held oceanside in Daytona Beach, which the series spotlights the team preparing for as the season continues.

The Navarro team consists of fourteen female athletes and twenty-four males that represent their school as fellow Bulldogs. Their co-ed team has become very wellknown as a big part of the community in Corsicana, Texas. Many of the athletes have helped around Corsicana to raise money for funding and good causes relevant to their community.

Navarro’s head coach Monica Aldama has been coaching the cheerleading team for twenty-four years and has made a huge difference in the standard at Navarro. She has turned the college cheer team in a gold standard for the cheer world. Aldama has become the icon of cheer coaches throughout many other cheer gyms. She holds her athletes to a much higher standard then the rest of Navarro students. As seen in the series she has pushed her athletes to be the best and has trained them with laborious conditioning to stay in shape and can carry out such difficult routines. With thousands of people watching Navarro they have extremely high expectations to uphold.

She not only has made a difference in the cheer world but in her athletes as well. The producers of “Cheer” have included highlights on how much she cares and helps her cheerleaders through there rough spots or pasts. Many times, on the show they have shown the cheerleaders past before they tried out for Navarro and how many of them have gone through hard past before they met Monica, who has helped them grow form what they went through. As a coach she steps up for them and creates a safe place, she makes sure her athletes grow in confidence and make better decisions with the help of the coaches and teammates.

Viewers have created on screen bonds with many of the athletes and expect for Netflix to continue with the series. Many of the scenarios that have been included in the episodes have created a way to connect with other cheerleaders through personal experiences and sports opportunities while creating role models through the show.

Durant Theatre Company shines with Brainstorm

The+entire+theatre+company+poses+proudly+with+the+trophy+representing+their+Superior+for+Brainstorm.

The entire theatre company poses proudly with the trophy representing their Superior for Brainstorm.

Before Thanksgiving Break, the Durant Theatre Company performed “Brainstorm: A Journey Inside the Teenage Mind” for Durant students, family, and faculty.

“Brainstorm”, a one act play, was written by Mr. Arment and his students, making the show personal and unique to Durant’s production.  Sydni Burge, a sophomore and actress for the Durant Theatre Company, said, “Every production of “Brainstorm” is different, because we play ourselves and our parents.  Everyone has a unique relationship with their parents and the show highlights that.”

The script, originally formulated by Ned Glasier, allows the school using the idea to fill in their own characters, based off the students of their drama club, and personalize it with interesting facts about their unique cast.  Mr. Arment commented on the development of the script, saying, “We had to do a lot of initial work on the background of each of the cast members. We really had to dive in through worksheets and conversations and collaboration to discover what has gone on in the lives of these kids.”

The play explained the teenage mind to the audience through comical and interactive scenes.  “Brainstorm” portrayed each student’s fears of growing up and the struggles they face as a teenager, such as those that come with homework, chores, and extracurriculars, all while trying to maintain healthy relationships with their parents.

Jordan Maddock, a stagehand for “Brainstorm”, said, “The [on stage] survey [with the cast] shows how the teenage brain functions.” It also showed how many of the cast’s teenagers struggle with the challenges that come with being a young adult.

Each student had the opportunity to portray one of their parents, resulting in laughs from the audience, but also showing how teenagers view their parents.  Isabelle Hoofnagle, an actress for the Durant Theatre Company, said, “[The portrayal] actually took a fair bit of preparation too. I had to watch my dad and study his mannerisms and his voice.”

Burge said, “Our portrayals of our parents are a way to lighten up the show, but also to say things we’ve never gotten to say [about our parents] before.”

The cast then played Never Have I Ever with the audience to show them that they are just like the cast of teenagers.  Never Have I Ever also allowed the adults in the gallery to remember parts of their teenage years and reminded them of the similar struggles they faced.

The show concluded with the cast showing letters they had written to their parents on poster boards.  Mr. Arment said, “The cast was coming from a place of such honesty and bravery that it really just set the play apart from other plays that I have done.”

On December 4, the Durant Theatre company took their One-Act to the District 9 One-Act Festival at USF.  The cast performed a revised version of “Brainstorm” in order to fit the 40-minute time limit. The Durant Theatre Company received a “Superior”, the highest score achievable.  “Brainstorm” proved to be another successful production of the Durant Theatre Company.

R. Kelly accused of sexual assault

R.+Kelly+accused+of+sexual+assault

Robert Kelly, famous R&B singer who goes by R. Kelly, has been accused of sexually assaulting and preying on young black teenagers specifically, for the past twenty years. Now, with the largely established #MeToo movement, R. Kelly’s alleged crimes are brought to the forefront of the public’s attention as women continually share their stories of his alleged sexual abuse done unto them.

Most prominently the Lifetime special “Surviving R. Kelly” has created controversy regarding R. Kelly’s alleged crimes against young black women. Many take to social media to share their opinions on: whether Kelly is guilty or not, and assuming he is guilty, whether his music should be muted or respected based on a separation from Kelly’s character.

Celebrities such as Taraji P. Henson and Erykah Badu’s morals have been called into question online. Henson claims that her statements about Kelly were misconstrued and she is in full support of the alleged victims. Badu, contrarily, has been criticized for her rumored refusal to take part in “Surviving R. Kelly,” which producer, Dream Hampton, asked her to join.

Although, Kelly has never been found guilty on any counts, many accusations have been made against him; in 1994 Kelly married an underage Aaliyah while she was just 15 and he was 24, in 1996 Kelly was sued by Tiffany Hawkins for sexual misconduct, in January of 2001 Kelly was indicted on child porn charges and found not guilty, in August of 2001 Tracy Sampson sued R. Kelly for alleged sexual abuse, in 2002 Patrice Jones sued Kelly for assaulting her when she was 16, and in May of 2002 Motina Woods sued Kelly for taping their sexual encounter without her consent. Kelly settled all cases of sexual assault and misconduct brought against him and many of the women signed non-disclosure agreements.

Kelly’s avoidance of any legal repercussions is not definitive proof of his innocence and does not indicate, as many argue, that the women who have shared their stories are lying. According to BBC.com only about 8 percent of all rape accusations are false. This percentage being much smaller than the number of rapes which go unreported each year.

The controversy surrounding R. Kelly in the media right now, regardless of his stance as an innocent or guilty man, could be detrimental to his career and may forever damage his image as a respected artist.

March’s Spicy Memes

  1. Evil Patrick: This meme surfaced late February to early March, predominantly on twitter. The “Evil Patrick” meme is a screen grab from an episode of Sponge Bob, and Patrick Star’s eyes are photoshopped upside down, giving him a menacing appearance. Captions for this meme mostly relate to an intentional menacing act that is about to be performed. The spiciness level of this meme is 4/5 habanero peppers for the versatility of the original picture and the wide variety of captions.
  2. Drake and Josh Door Meme: This meme also popped up in late February on Twitter. The background is from the Nickelodeon show Drake and Josh specifically the episode where  they build a tree house. After completing the main walls for the tree house, Drake forgets to bring a saw to cut a door hole, not realizing this until after they put it up. Josh astonished his step brother could make such a stupid mistake gives him a dumbfounded look. Spiciness level is 3/5 habanero peppers, what counted against this meme is the lack of flexibility of it.
  3. Double D’s Book of Facts: This meme has actually been around for awhile, but has started picking up popularity like never before recently. It is prominent on Instagram. The show where the screenshot originated from is Cartoon Network’s Ed, Edd, and Eddy. The picture is of Edd, also known as Double D, holding up his “Book of Facts” with a manic look on his face. Spiciness level for this bad boy is 4/5 because of how it can tie into other memes, or just be flat out shocking.
  4. God’s Plan Starts Playing Meme: This is a screen grab from the music video of rapper Drake’s single God’s Plan. This meme gained popularity over Twitter in the past week, and is used to show extreme gratification over most of the time a small kind act. Spiciness level is 2/5 for low impact uses.

Adventure Beyond Compare

By: TJB

Abigail was a curious little girl,

Belonging to the Wellocke family, daughter of the King’s General.

Countless jewels cover her neck and decorate the hilt of her sword.

Determined to find adventure

Every morning she ventures through the woods

Farther each day with growing excitement

Gasping at each new wonder she found.

Hush child, she reminds herself

Incredible monsters hunt in the dark shadows of these woods

Just enough fear to fill her will adrenaline

Keen senses notice all the colors in the air

Lost in her own mind

Malice overcomes her heart, preparing her

Never has she felt this power

Oblivious to the wolf stalking her from above.

Power from the wolf’s body throws her to the ground

Quasar eyes stare through her soul.

Rushing through her mind: What a story this will make.

Silk cloth torn from her cloak caught in the creature’s teeth.

Tomorrow will not come if she waits

Unsure if she remembered to breathe, she moves

Valor aids her as she grips her sword and begins her dance.

Washed in the blood of a lifeless beast, her sword dripping.

Xanadu grew in the trees and the sunlight, echoing her first victory.

Yearning to taste more of the thrill and danger.

Zaftig from her discovery.
